Treviso Liberty

TrevisoLibertyPosterFor December the morning was exceptionally mild, that is, the temperature had not dropped below freezing as it would be normal in my part, and the Sun has given us the energy to face the boredom of one hundred and fifty kilometers of motorway up to Treviso.
I confess that this excursion was not planned, I considered the risks associated with the unstable health situation to be excessive, especially if you plan to find yourself indoors with too many people, and don't tell me that a vaccination certificate is a sufficient preventative measure, maybe it was. In this regard, I would gladly refer you to a post written nearly five months ago from mine sherpa/photographer / guide / driver /webmaster/ecc. , entitled "A piece of paper”.
Let c
as it is, it didn't seem nice to miss the appointment with the exhibition patchwork di Treviso, also in consideration of the many difficulties that the association Patchwork Idea he had certainly had to overcome to be able to organize an exhibition in this extremely complicated period, and so I took courage and we left.
I can tell you it was worth it, nel senso che, although the exhibition is forcibly limited in space, among the works there was a certain propensity for risk, what you run when you go to explore challenging subjects and contamination of techniques. Those who follow this blog he already knows of my admiration for those who dare, obviously if he does it without seeking applause, but only for the spirit of artistic adventure.
I imagine that the title of the exhibition implicitly contained an invitation to Treviso people to go and look for traces of that style in their city, elements that have been suffering for too long, suffocated by a building that disrespects all forms of beauty and condemned to become sterile museum testimonies, be it a small artifact or an entire building.
About the definition "Liberty”, it is the result of a double misunderstanding.
The first lies in its genesis. The original name of this style which sprouted in Belgium and blossomed in France was "Art Nouveau”, then translated into Italian in "New Art" and also translated into "Floral Art". It then happened that the Liberty Stores in London, specialized in oriental art, began to propose objects to the public Art Nouveau, and thus the custom of defining everything that recalled that style with the name of the English importer became widespread, and in Italy the concise definition "Liberty"Soon replaced the initial one.
The fact that the Anglo-Saxon term immediately brings to mind the concept of freedom, at the time always not granted, contributed to the definitions used in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Sezession a Vienna e Art Nouveau Prague), to reiterate the tear with the previous styles, understood as expressions of the dominant regime.
In realtà, and this is the second misconception, l’Art Nouveau it imposed new and close correlations between form and decoration, between use and charm, between design and nature, between synthesis and imagination, forcing artists and builders to live together in the fickle canons of modernism, and essentially giving rise to a design method known today as industrial design.
If it is of your interest, know that the major examples of architecture Liberty in Italy they are located in Turin, but it is very little compared to what Budapest can show off, Prague, Riga e Glasgow.
To return to the quilt, even the artists of Patchwork Idea have had to measure themselves with delicate and light aesthetic canons, just like flowers are, but avoiding falling into the lezioso or the cloying. In the short video below you can check how theArt Nouveau through the patchwork, and evaluate those subjects who have certainly left a mark in the imagination of those who have visited the exhibition. I leave it to you to judge if the experiment was successful, that is to look to the past to imagine a future. Io, as I have already written, I received an impression that lifted my spirit, and these days it is not a trivial matter, credetemi.
Technical note.
Purtroppo, for logistical reasons due to the restoration of the historic site of Ca 'da Noal, the exhibition was forced into a single rather dark and oppressive room, I would dare to say cloistered, of the Santa Caterina Museum, with limited spaces available, and unfortunately in those conditions the small camera that we brought with us showed all its limits.
We will try to do better next year.
